The Fact DNA Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) STAT Genetic Test evaluates the copy number of the SMN1 gene, which is associated with spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). SMA is an inherited neuromuscular condition that affects motor neurons in the spinal cord and may lead to progressive muscle weakness and muscle atrophy.

When a homozygous deletion of SMN1 is identified, the test also reports the SMN2 copy number. The number of SMN2 copies can provide additional information that may help healthcare professionals assess the potential severity of SMN1-related SMA.
