Atrial fibrillation (AFib) is a common type of irregular heart rhythm, or arrhythmia. It occurs when the heart's upper chambers, called the atria, beat irregularly rather than maintaining a consistent rhythm.
Because the heart may not move blood as efficiently during AFib, blood can sometimes pool in the atria. This can increase the risk of blood clot formation, and certain blood clots can travel to the brain and contribute to a stroke.
